Amusing News Article

The Centre Daily Times recently started a new feature in the Sunday edition in which they republish local stories from exactly 100 years ago. I find myself amused the language, the names, and the social attitudes reflected in these stories. Here's a good one from last Sunday:

Barber in Trouble Again

Saturday night there was a racket out in Brown Row, near Lingle's foundry. Someone telephoned for the police, stating that there was trouble there. It was afterwards learned that a Hungarian by the name of Mike Barber was in the home of Eliza Walker and raising the "deuce." Eliza was outside and the foreigner had full sway inside. William Walker, Eliza's son, on hearing of the fracas started out, and on arriving at the seat of contention simply paralyzed the fellow who was creating the trouble. Monday a warrant was placed in the hands of Policeman William Beezer who went to the home of Rosie Bunco, where he was boarding, and placed him under arrest and took him to jail. Mike Barber is the same fellow who entered the house of Mrs. Thomas Rishel about three years ago and made indecent proposals to her. He was tried in the court and served a sentence of two years in the western penitentiary.
