A New Beer

Last night was a rarity for me: going out to a bar. It's just not a part of my lifestyle. The fact that I went out on a weekday made it an even more rare event.

The occasion? Paul was playing keyboards for Mad Muse's Valentine's Day Cabaret at The Brewery. I played keyboards with one of my bands a couple of times at the Brewery nearly 35 years ago (although I failed to enter the dates and personnel for the gigs in my otherwise meticulous records), so this was kind of a major deja vu experience.

The place basically hadn't changed at all, although now they have an audio mixing area for the band, an amenity we certainly did not have. Major flashbacks.

Anyway, on to the new beer news. I'm not going to sit in a smokey bar for three hours without drinking something. So I examined the taps at the bar and was intrigued by a the name of a beer (ale, actually) that I had never heard of before: Railbender Ale. On the basis of the name alone, I bought a glass. It was very pleasant, a little on the strong side, but not as strong as the Weyerbachers that I have been making a steady diet out of (see previous post). So by the third hour and my third Railbender (great name, huh?) I was in a very good place, exactly where I like to be when I am drinking. Had we stayed another hour, I would have had another, but the show had ended so we went home.

Yeah, their ale was indeed pricey.

Unbelievably, I have yet to start my passport at Zeno's! I don't know what I am waiting for. Of course if I am going to log 80 beers I am going to have to go out a lot more than I currently do.

I would also probably do this during their new non-smoking hours. I'm sort of schizo about smoke. I've never smoked (seriously) myself, but the smell of cigarette smoke triggers off a lot of pleasant associations from my youth, so I don't mind being around smokers. But I do not like the residue that is left on my hair, skin, and clothes. Yech.

Exactly! I knew there was a reason I've been avoiding bars most of my life.

My sentiments, exactly!
