A Good Song

Yesterday I worked out the tablature to One Day at a Time from Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam's first pop album in 28 years, An Other Cup. What a gorgeous, gorgeous song. I don't even mind the three lines that contain Islamic imagery. As the Cat said recently, in philosophy there will always be debates, but you can't argue with a good song.

You know, the more I find out about Islam, the more impressed I am. Of course, just like Xtianity, it's open to horrible abuses of fundamentalism, but the basic philosophy isn't bad, and the mythology is very beautiful and poetic. The "scholarly" Islamic types appeal to me the same way Jewish scholars do-- there's a dedication to understanding and questioning the "deeper" meaning of the faith that is very admirable, and very much more philosophical than religious, reminding me in a way of Eastern mysticism.

If Islam were practiced around the world as Cat Stevens practices it, we would have heaven on earth.

I likewise appreciate honest scholarly efforts in Christianity, Islam and Judaism, particularly if the philosophers have a mystical bent. Nasrudin's stories, to me, are indistinguishable from those of the Zen masters. True wisdom transcends denominational differences.
