Another gruesome killing in the name of god

A large man dressed in military fatigues, boots and cap approaches from behind and covers her mouth with his left hand. In his right hand, he clutches a large knife with a black handle and an 8in blade. He proceeds to cut her throat from the middle, slicing from side to side.

Her cries — “Ah, ah, ah” — can be heard above the “Allahu akbar” (God is greatest) intoned by the holder of the mobile phone.

If you think you can stomach the full account of the execution of one of Iraq's top journalists, browse to http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2168496,00.html

There is one question I often ponder when I read such accounts: How many times in the history of humanity has a theist shouted or chanted something such as "For the glory of God" upon killing another human being, and how many times has an atheist shouted "I don't believe in God!" when killing someone?

So much for the notion that religion is the foundation of moral behavior.
