Joss Whedon

Back when the Buffy and Angel series originally ran on TV, I saw only some of the earlier episodes. The reason I did not keep up with Buffy is that the show switched to a network not carried by our cable system at that time!

This past year I have been watching the entire series of each show, starting with Buffy. I am now near the end of season four for Angel.

Joss Whedon is such a brilliant writer.

Angel gets better when Spike joins the cast. James Marsters is awesome. His charactor made Buffy and it pulls Angel out of also-ran status.

I don't care much for the first seasons of Angel at all.

From the start to finish of Buffy, Spike was my favorite character.

He was supposed to die in the church fire but Joss decided he was such a good character that he would bring him back as a "crippled vampire" that Dru nursed back to health.

His very existance changed the show and by force of his acting and personality Marsters was able to turn the show in a direction that was greater than it could have ever gone without him.

The entire 7-season story arc revolved around him by the end. The vampire who redeemed himself -unlike Angel who was cursed with his soul against his will. Spike's redemtion became the show and by the final episode could have been called "Spike, the Vampire" instead of "Buffy."

Angel, in comparison was cold creamed corn from a can in comparison.

The short-lived Firefly is next on my to-watch list after Angel. I suppose I will want to see Serenity, too, although I'm conflicted about seeing the movie before I watch the Firefly episodes.

I want to support you in your conflicted-ness. It totally makes sense for you to see the series before the movie - especially since you're a Joss Whedon fan and not in it for a quickie sf fix.

Hopefully everything is going to work out.

We have been getting installments of Angel through Netflix and we have Firefly on order. The last disk of Angel arrived Tuesday, but to our chagrin it arrived damaged and unplayable. A replacement is supposed to arrive tomorrow. If Firefly is delivered soon after that, we should be able to watch those episodes and then see Serenity in the theatre. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
