I'll tell, though. If you draw a line from Montauk, Long Island, to Martha's Vineyard, Block Island lies about 1/4 of the way between those locations. In fact, you can take a ferry from Montauk to Block Island. We prefer to take the ferry from Point Judith, Rhode Island, which lies due north of BI.
I won't go into great detail describing the island. Like everything in the universe, a web page exists for that purpose: http://www.blockisland.com/. In short, it is a very small island, seemingly frozen in a far less complicated time. It is a wonderful place to get away for a while.
In addition to the usual beach-sitting, swimming in the ocean, and eating, drinking, and making merry, Martin, Paul, and I did something new this year, something we've been wanting to do for a number of years: walk the entire perimeter of the island. It is an 18-mile hike, and it took us eight hours. What a fulfilling experience it was.
