Feeling sorry for fruit

I am now eating the last tangerine from the bag of tangerines I bought last week. I always feel sorry for the last piece of fruit in a batch when it goes uneaten for several days. You know, when that banana starts to get a little brown and soft and no one will eat it? So, unless the last piece of fruit is so far gone that it triggers my gag reflex, I'll always finish it off.

Eating this last tangerine while talking to kent1 reminded me of a book that I used to read to my children, Patchy Pumpkin Finds a New Home. No one took Patchy home for Halloween, and he was very sad. No one wanted him for a Thanksgiving pie, either. The days got shorter and colder and snow began to fall on Patchy. I won't give away the ending, in case you want to read it.

Aw, a touching story of a lonely pumpkin who wants nothing more than to be sacrificed to the humans in a pagan mutilation and burning ritual, or baked and eaten.

Heh, if you think what *didn't* happen to Patchy was rough, you should see what his final fate was! Personally, I would rather have been mutilated and burned or baked and eaten!
